About the artist
Maryon Kantaroff (1933 – 2019) was a Canadian sculptor known for her large-scale outdoor sculptures in bronze and other materials. Kantaroff's interest in sculpture developed while studying at the Chelsea College of Art, and later the British Museum in the early 1960s. Her first solo exhibition was the Temple Gallery, London in 1962. In 1974, she established the Toronto Art Foundry, frustrated at the lack of resources available for her large scale public commissions. She was awarded the Sculpture Society of Canada's prestigious President's Award in 1992.
Ron Hitchins was Kantaroff’s protegee. She introduced him to the medium of clay while he was sitting for her (see bust above). From then on, Hitchins started sculpting pendants that he would bring to her studio for firing until he developped his own practice. Cal Smith Gallery presents the biggest collection of Hitchin’s works for sale and is pleased to bring a piece of Kantaroff’s alongside it.
