Ron Hitchins

(1926–2019)

  • Ron Hitchins (1926–2019) was a British multidisciplinary artist and flamenco dancer of Chinese and Lithuanian descent. Inspired by the work of Picasso, Brâncusi, Ernst and Hepworth, he dedicated his life to experimenting and mastering multi-media art forms.

His own home served as a spectacular gallery of his life’s work, with thousands of handmade terracotta tiles, fibreglass relief sculptures and imaginative furnishings. Although many motifs were repeated, each element – astonishingly – is unique in design and composition.

Ron Hitchins’ work, sitting between Modernism, Brutalism and Outsider Art, is increasingly sought after. It has been purchased by major collections such as the V&A and the Museum of London.

Cal Smith Gallery presents the largest collection of works by Ron Hitchins. Most pieces shown here formed part of the furnishings in Ron's own home, and come with a certificate of authenticity signed by the Ron Hitchins Estate.
