About the artist
Valerie Thornton (1931 – 1991) was a British etcher and printmaker. After studying at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art in the 1950s, she studied printmaking in Paris with the renowned teacher Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Thornton then moved to New York where she spent two years at the Pratt Institute.
Her work is featured in many public collections, including the V&A, the British Museum, Tate and the New York Met.
